Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a form of arthritis that primarily affects the spine. The condition causes fusion of spine and other joints if untreated leads to a painfull life and makes a person one piece to the extent that he may not be able to bend if severe. Exercises should include postural training, range of motion exercises, stretching, recreational activities, and occasionally hydrotherapy. However manipulation should be avoided if there is spinal fusion osteoporosis (weakness of bone) as it may result in fracture and lead to disability.
Home exercises are good, but supervised exercise programs or formal physical therapy are of of greater benefit, and exercise therapy combined with hydrotherapy is more effective than exercises alone . All patients suffering from SpA weather controlled with medication or not will benefit from education and exercise.
Stop smoking - Cigarette smoking rapidly increases the progression SpA, especially the progression of structural damage of the spine, in addition it also increases the chances of acute coronary events (heart attacks) in patients with SPA compered to general population.
